On Thursday, November 15, 2018, exactly five years have elapsed since the beginning of the first commercial 4G network in Slovakia. Throughout the period, it has become possible to significantly improve all the parameters of the network to reach where the fast mobile Internet has not yet reached more miles in Slovakia.
2013: The 4G network starts unexpectedly in five cities
Slovak Telekom launched a 4G network in five Slovak cities (Nitra, Trnava, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov). It was originally 73/23 Mbps, and in particular the data transfer was already a major step forward in this version. Sending photos, videos, and sharing files is 10 to 20 times faster. By the end of the year, coverage increased to 31%, to 23.7% of the population.
2014: 4G network is more than half of the population and the new speed
After successful 4G network bandwidth, Telekom arrives in Bratislava in April 2014 with the 4G network in Bratislava, where it introduces new maximum speeds: 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps. They are available thanks to a better track, but at the same time they require even more weight in the housing estates. A few weeks later he followed in Košice and Trenčín.
By the end of 2014 more than half of Slovakia was covered: already 52 percent. In addition to 84 towns and several villages, the resorts of Štrbské Pleso have also grown.
2015: 4G + comes in and a new speed limit of 225 and 300 Mbps
In 2015 coverage has advanced, crossing the boundary 75 percent. By the end of the year, the 4G network was available in 134 cities and hundreds of other villages, including new ski resorts such as Chopok, Jasna, Donovaly, Malino Brdo and Velka Rača.
This year, Telekom has created new technological innovations. In June, LTE-CA (4G +) in Nitra expanded to 225 Mb / s, and in November it exceeded LTE-CA up to 300 Mbps Bratislava.
At the same time, Telekom received two P3 Best In Test certificates thanks to the highest score in the Slovak operator network test.
2016: 375 Mbps in the 4G network and in all affected cities
Telecom has achieved new milestones, which include 140 seats at the end of March 2016, and total coverage increased to 87.2% by the end of the year. The 4G + network is also present in other cities such as Košice, Trenčín, Senec and Marianka.
Speed competition did not happen – in December, the 4G + network accelerated 375 Mbps In several areas of Bratislava.
Two other Best in Test certificates were certified for quality by which Telekom succeeded in skipping other market players' score with the report.
2017: 4G network calls and a strong test result
Also in 2017, the coverage of the 4G network expanded in two directions: 89% of the population reached the base and 4G + reached Pezinka, Poprad, Zvolen, Piešťany or Nový Zámkov.
Great start to the service VoLTE (Voice over LTE). As a result, customers do not have to switch from 4G to 3G / 2G networks to make calls, get higher quality and make quick connections.
In the autumn, Telekom will get the best F3 in Best in Test with the highest score.
2018: 4G accelerates – up to 877 Mbps
In 2018, Telekom used the technology know-how for three new news that resulted in higher speeds for customers. The so-called "64QAM modulation increases capacity by up to 50% when sending data, the new maximum upload 75 Mbps.
256QAM modulation accelerated the ability to download data, downloaded by about one third, and the current maximum of 375 500 Mbps.
Finally, Telekom joined a combination of multiple bands and spectrum, adding 4 × 4 MIMO solutions and reaching a new peak in Bratislava: 877 Mbps.
Investigations and real solutions
Telekom has conducted several tests on the 4G network in the years 2014-2016, which were later used in real-time commercial deployment. Approximately one or two years pass between the pilot and the actual traffic as the 300, 375 and 877 Mbps speeds are gradually being introduced.
How does a 4-year plant grow?
The 4G network has a significant impact on total data traffic. 3G network customers have begun dating, but the 4G network is a key growth and significant contribution. By comparison, in 2014, customers provided 7 PB data, while in 2018 Telekom expects up to three times the volume.
The share of the 4G network is growing steadily in all traffic. By the end of 2014 it was close to 10%, a year later it reached 30%, and by the end of 2016 it exceeded 60%. 80% of total data traffic.
VoLTE as a modern technology
Start VoLTE, that is, in the 4G network, we have long been waiting for calls and making progress on customer experience. In the 4G network, you can connect the call within 1-2 seconds, so the connection quality is higher. More than 50 VoLTE supported models are currently in Telekom's portfolio, including the full range of Apple devices. Their number will continue to rise, helping to create a new level of technology.
