Officer Christopher Wells, 36, was shot in the leg and suffered a fracture of the femur. Officer Joseph Murphy, 32, was wounded in the hand. Injuries to both officers required surgery. Wells has been in violence for 14 years and Murphy for six years.

They were considered stable, ”said Commissioner Dermot Shea.

Goppy, 41, a peacekeeper at New York City University in Harlem, was shot dead and pronounced dead at the scene.

Hours earlier, a 41-year-old woman who was thought to be Goppy’s wife went to NYPD District 105 to report the domestic incident Monday night, Shea said. The two officers went home with him and were there for six minutes when Goppy arrived.

“He enters the front door almost immediately and starts shooting at our two officers,” Shea said.

The officers returned fire. It was not clear how many times Goppy had been hit. The woman was not injured. Investigators recalled two handguns at the scene and another somewhere else, Shea said. Goppy was licensed to carry firearms.

Shea said Goppy did not have a criminal record, but officers had previously reacted to the residence due to domestic issues. He said investigators looked into what had happened in these cases.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he met with the families of the injured officers.

“There are officers here who do the Lord’s work,” he said. “They protect survivors of domestic violence. They get involved in the most immovable, difficult situations you can imagine.”

Pat Lynch, president of the Police Charity Association, the city’s largest police union, blew up elected officials for cutting police budgets.
