CHARLESTON, WV (WSAZ) – A Charleston police officer was shot on Tuesday afternoon while responding to a parking complaint, he has a pulse but is “out of the woods”.

CPD leader Tyke Hunt made the statement at a press conference outside the CAMC general, where Officer Cassie Johnson is ill.

“Warrior, he has a pulse,” Hunt said, saying Johnson was “usually a fatal wound.”

“Thank God at all times that he’s still with us,” the boss said.

The shooting was reported shortly before 3 p.m. on Garrison Avenue.

Hunt said the suspect was also shot dead, but is still alive.

Johnson, 28, was sworn in on January 11, 2019.

“I had a dream for a while and I’m just glad I finally came true,” Johnson said then. “I’ve worked extremely hard over the last year to prepare for it and I’m just really happy to be able to follow my dreams and work at Charleston PD with a great group of guys and be able to help out of town. “

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A Charleston policeman was shot.

Representatives from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office tell the WSAZ that the officer responded to a parking complaint on Garrison Avenue when the shooting occurred.

He was taken to hospital.

Investigators said the suspect was also shot dead, presumably by the officer. Charleston Police detained him elsewhere on Garrison Avenue.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and the Charleston Police Department are conducting an investigation.

Chief of Police Tyke Hunt and Amy Shuler Goodwin, Mayor of Charleston, issued a statement: “This (Tuesday) afternoon, a Charleston police officer was shot while on duty. The officer has been taken to hospital and is undergoing surgery. now. We ask all Charleston residents to keep our officer and the entire Charleston Police Department in our thoughts and prayers. We will provide more information as soon as it is available. “
