MOGADISHU, Somalia – A local official said at least seven people had died in a suicide bombing in an ice cream parlor in the Somali capital, and an al-Shabab extremist group linked to al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility.

The attack came a few hours after Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller visited Mogadishu to meet with U.S. ambassadors and military personnel.

Somali government spokesman Salah Omar Hassan has reported the victims of the bombing to reporters. The government said at least eight people were injured in the “terrible” attack.

Al-Shabab often targets the capital.
