Bill and Melinda Gates have never signed a marriage agreement, but they have a “separation contract” that stipulates how they will share their assets when they divorce, TMZ reported on Monday.
The philanthropic couple announced on Monday that they would divorce after 27 years of marriage.
Bill Gates, who owns 1% of Microsoft’s founder and tech company, is estimated at $ 146 billion, according to Bloomberg. It ranks fourth on Bloomberg’s list of the richest people in the world. A divorce settlement can be one of the largest.
TMZ shared a copy of Gateses ’divorce applications asking whether the couple had entered into a signature, separation or community property agreement.
The couple said they had a separation contract, which they wanted the court to enforce, but they did not say they had a prenup.

A prenup is a legal agreement that couples can sign before marriage. It states what will happen to a couple’s property if they divorce or one of them dies, and can also set financial expectations for a marriage.
A divorce agreement or contract is a private document that a couple signs when they want to spend time separately and live separately. It lists their rights and obligations, such as child custody and custody, and is signed without the involvement of the court.
According to the New York Bar Association, a divorce agreement is sometimes followed by a divorce, but some couples use it as an option to repair their marriage.
In the divorce proceedings, the couple requested that their real estate, personal property, and debts be divided under a divorce agreement. Melinda Gates did not ask for spousal support.
The couple also said their marriage was “irrevocably interrupted” and asked the court to dissolve her marriage on the date stated in their divorce agreement, although that date was not mentioned in the divorce applications shared by TMZ.
Documents filed Monday in King County, Washington, respond to Melinda Gates as plaintiff and Bill Gates. The submissions include the date of the hearing, April 4, 2022.
Since Gates ’divorce, the convention could be the largest ever, Insider Katie Canales reported. When Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, parted ways in 2019, their accounts were $ 38 billion, making MacKenzie Scott the third richest woman in the world.
