“Absolutely, I said yes on the spot,” said Fauci, NBC’s “Today” presenter, Savannah Guthrie.

He will continue to serve as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which he has served through six presidential administrations while leading the country’s efforts against the coronavirus epidemic.

“I asked him to stay in the same role as the previous several presidents, and I asked him to have a chief medical advisor with me and be part of the COVID team,” Biden said of Fauci.

Guthrie also asked Fauci how Biden plans to hire Americans to wear a mask for the first 100 days of his office.

“Is that enough, or do you feel it could set an artificial time limit on how long people have to wear a mask?” Guthrie asked.

“No, he didn’t think so,” Fauci replied. “What he wants is just a uniform – and that’s a good idea.”

Fauci added that after the first 100 days, masks may still be needed to prevent the virus from spreading, but Biden wants to commit a structured timeframe on behalf of the American people.

“I discussed this with him and told him I thought it was a good idea,” Fauci concluded.

Although Biden wants everyone to wear a mask, he does not have the constitutional authority to directly order a national mask commission.

At his last campaign meeting last month, Trump suggested he try to fire Fauci after the election.
