The $ 1.5 billion prize winner – the single winner's record – came to South Carolina almost five months after the drawing.
The lucky man decided to remain anonymous and, according to a statement by the South Carolina Educational Lottery Committee, a one-time Mega Millions worth € 877,784,124.
The $ 877 million payment is the pre-tax amount, which will be about 7% for the state and 24% for the federal state, according to a commission spokesman. The committee said it was the biggest jackpot payout for a single winner in American history.
"We are delighted that the winner will be on a South Carina and will present this remarkable prize," said CEO Hogan Brown.
The winner had 180 days to claim the prize – the deadline of 19 April was fast approaching.
If the winner hadn't come forward, the winning Mega store selling the Simpsonville KC Mart would have been $ 50,000, and the state of South Carolina would have been without $ 61 million.
"We respect the winner's decision to remain anonymous and respect the wishes of the winner," said Brown. The committee will not reveal that the winner is a man or a woman.
The winner bought the Quick Pick ticket with the current decision, according to the lottery officials.
The person allowed a client server to go to the store in front of the line to buy a Mega Millions lottery, according to a Commission statement. "Simple benevolent action has led to incredible results."
