Madison East High School’s elementary school “died unexpectedly during Thanksgiving break after a brief COVID-related illness,” the principal wrote in an email sent to students and families.

Isai Morocho is under the age of 20 who is known to have died of COVID-19 in Wisconsin.

Brendan Kearney, director of Madison East, sent an email to his students saying Morocho was “a friend and family member with a careful smile and a great sense of humor.”

Kearney said Morocho was also an excellent student who enjoyed theater and talked about becoming a chef and having his own business.

“We also want to recall this tragic loss of life to the threat that the COVID-19 epidemic poses to all members of our community, young and old,” Kearney wrote. “It’s especially hard to get news like that at a time when we can’t get together and meet in person and we all have our own ways to deal with the loss.”

Morocho’s family launched the GoFundMe site to cover funeral expenses.

“Isai showed the most caring and excited attitude about life, which made everyone around him excited about what he was doing with it,” the GoFundMe site said. “He was known for his empathy, humor, and more.”

By Monday morning, the GoFundMe site had raised nearly $ 14,000 in three days.

Madison East High School offers support groups to students through Zoom on Monday and Tuesday.
