In a New York Times article on “Shared Losses,” he gave an intimate account of his experience and described what a “tragedy began in the morning that began as properly as any other day.”
“Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Eat vitamins … Throw my hair in a ponytail before pulling my son out of his crib. After changing his diaper, I felt a sharp spasm,” she wrote in her piece released on Wednesday. “I fell to the ground with my arms and hummed a lullaby to keep us both calm. The cheerful melody is in stark contrast to my feeling that something is wrong. I knew when I was squeezing my firstborn child that I was losing my second.”
He continued, “Hours later I was lying in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the shell of his palm and kissed the knuckle, wet from both of our tears. I stared at the cold white walls, my eyes twinkled. I tried to imagine how he was healing.”
The Princess of Sussex, formerly Meghan Markle, and her husband, Prince Harry, have an 18-month-old son, Archie.
The 39-year-old princess said she shares her story to help break the silence around an all-too-common tragedy.
“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief that many have experienced but few have talked about,” he wrote. “Nevertheless, despite the shockingly common nature of the pain, the conversation remains taboo, imbued with (unwarranted) shame and a lone cycle of mourning.”
He continued, “When we are invited to share our pain, we take the first steps toward healing.”
Meghan spoke of the pain and loss experienced by so many in 2020, mentioning the coronavirus epidemic, the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, and political divisions.
“Coupled with this polarization and the social isolation needed to overcome the pandemic, we feel more unique than ever,” he said.
He also encouraged others to take this Thanksgiving opportunity to sign up with our loved ones.
“Because we are planning a holiday that is similar to the previous ones – many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, afraid, shared and maybe struggling to find something, anything to be grateful for – we undertake to ask others: are you okay? ‘ ” he said.
Meghan, the American actress and star of the television legal drama “Suits,” married Harry, II, at a lavish ceremony in May 2018 at Windsor Castle. Granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth. His son was born the following year.
Earlier this year, the couple announced that they would step down from their royal duties and move to North America, citing what they said was the intolerable intrusion and racist attitude of the British media. They recently bought a house in Santa Barbara, California.
