North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has spent $ 1.8 million to overthrow State Secretary Jeff Delzer, who clashed with him over the budget and was defeated in a June election. But the candidate who beat him, Dave Andahl, died in COVID-19 in the fall, too late to change the ballot papers, and was elected posthumously. Local Republicans chose Delzer to take the place, and Burgum sued the deployment of his own candidate. But this week, the state’s highest court ruled against him, writing that the governor “has no legal or constitutional authority to appoint a vacancy in this case”. And before one last slap in Burgum, Delzer is being considered as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
