In an interview with The Intercept podcast, the progressive hero and firefighter said Democrats failed to create a succession plan after a generation of Pelosi and his old leaders, many of whom are now 80, step aside. Pelosi indicated that this upcoming two-year term will be his last as president.

“I think we need a new leadership in the Democratic Party … the internal dynamics of the house have made it very little possible to succeed,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who is 31 years old. “It’s easy to tell someone, ‘Well, you know why you’re not running? But the House is extremely complex and I’m not ready yet. It can’t be me. I know I couldn’t do this job.’

“Even for Conservative members of the party who think Nancy Pelosi is too liberal for them, there isn’t necessarily a viable alternative, so when there’s just a challenge, it kind of crashes,” he continued. “And this, I think, is the result of many years of power being concentrated in leadership, in the absence of real nurturing of the next generation of leadership.”

Pelosi’s House of Representatives unanimously appointed him last month to hold another two years as Speaker of the House after he resigned. But he may not be able to win the Speaker’s hand in the House’s January 3 vote. With the House Democrats unexpectedly losing more than a dozen seats in the November election, most of them are only one-digit, meaning a handful of Democratic shortcomings could deny Pelosit from leading another cycle.

Ocasio-Cortez, however, made no indication that he would vote against Pelosi on the floor, even as other moderate Democrats did. He also floated some progressive Ocasio-Cortez with Schumer as a potential primary challenger in 2022, although he misunderstood whether he was interested in running.

Asked if Pelosi and Schumer “should go,” Ocasio-Cortez replied, “I mean, I think so.”

But he warned again that the party has no succession plan or serious candidates unable to “fill this vacuum”.

“My hesitation is that I want to make sure that if we point people in a direction that we have a plan for,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And my concern, and I recognize this as a failure, is something that needs to be sorted out, that there is no plan. How can we fill that vacuum?

“Because if you create this vacuum, there is so much vile force at play that it will fill this vacuum even worse. So the real sad situation is that there are more conservative people than they are even willing to … fill this void. “
