It happened at the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue, just before 7 p.m.
Sources tell Action News that the officer was shot dead during a traffic stop.
There were three men and one woman in the vehicle when at least one man opened fire on the officer.
NEW DETAILS: Philadelphia police stopped a vehicle and asked the man in the back seat to exit. Police said he got out and started shooting. At least 5 officers returned the fire. Action News learned that the officer had been shot in the leg and was currently hospitalized in a stable condition.
The Sgt. According to a 24-year-old man who was inside the vehicle, he was fatally wounded in a gun exchange with five police officers. Eric Gripp at the Philadelphia Police Department.
There was no immediate news of what triggered the traffic.
