The police say that an officer in a Hudson Valley village fleeing a runaway fox accidentally shot in his chest.
Authorities say, 24-year-old Ellenville policeman Harold Nunuvero hit while responding to a report on the fox in the village on Tuesday morning.
The village police chief, Philip Mattracion, says the animal was loaded at Nunuvero and tried to jump over the nearby fence. But he caught his leg and turned around. Nunuvero's gun stopped when he landed and hit the policeman's bulletproof vest.
Another officer shot and killed the fox while Nunuvero was on the ground.
Nunuvero was later taken to hospital for treatment and released.
Mattracion said the official's bullet-proof vest "undoubtedly" saved his life.
