It is not clear who is behind the attack.
The U.S. Treasury Department and the U.S. Department of Commerce have been victims of a cyber violation, the agency and a source aware of the violation confirmed to ABC News.
“We can confirm that an infringement occurred in one of our offices. We have asked CISA and the FBI to investigate and we are currently unable to make any further comments, ”the Commerce Department said in a statement on Sunday.
A source familiar with the investigation tells ABC News that it was a sophisticated attack and very few entities are capable of it. Authorities are investigating and evaluating whether the Russian government was behind the violation, which could extend beyond the treasury and commercial departments.
“The U.S. government is aware of these reports and will take all necessary steps to identify and remedy any issues related to the situation,” NSC spokesman John Ullyot told ABC News.
The Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, told ABC News it was helping with the investigation.
“We work closely with our agency partners on recent networking activities in government networks. CISA provides technical assistance to affected organizations as they work to identify and mitigate potential trade-offs. “
